If you use other storage boxes or bins in lieu of a toy chest, be aware that they might present the lid-trapping and suffocation hazards now eliminated from toy chests that comply with the standard. If in doubt about the safety of a storage box or bin, completely remove the lid. With the lid gone, your child cannot be trapped by it and cannot suffocate inside the box. Many parents and caregivers use shelving to store toys. The greatest hazard with shelving occurs when a child pulls on it or tries to climb or stand on it. The shelving can tip over and crush the child. The key safety precaution with shelving, then, is to make sure the structure is attached securely to the wall or is designed so that it does not tip over. Another challenge with toy storage— one that may test your ingenuity— is to try to keep toys intended for different age groups apart. Accomplishing this separation is crucial if you have older children as well as children younger than three years. Older children’s toys often have small parts, small balls, and other components that are hazardous for younger children but not for the intended user. Here are some ways you may try to accomplish the challenging task of keeping children’s toys separated:  • Get a different color storage box for each child. Designate a separate room for older children to store and play with their toys, and keep infants and toddlers away from this room. Explain to older children the importance of not letting their younger sibling play with small toys.
